Osborn Road Complete Streets Scottsdale Road to Hayden

project OVERVIEW

The purpose of this project was to enhance connectivity, safety, and quality of life for residents and City visitors by completing a critical east/west gap of bicycle facilities on Osborn Road, from Hayden Road to Scottsdale Road downtown. It includes connections to Osborn Park and Indian Bend Wash Path, along with a roundabout featuring geometric speed control to ensure vehicle safety and pedestrian refuges at the Miller Road intersection. This project exemplifies our commitment to creating efficient and safe transportation solutions.

Y2K Engineering spearheaded the traffic engineering design for the City of Scottsdale's Osborn Road Complete Streets project. The innovative alternative intersection design caters to future traffic needs while minimizing right-of-way impact.

Due to a nearby closure of Drinkwater Boulevard for bridge re-construction, existing traffic counts were insufficient for typical traffic projection methods. To assess future traffic volumes in the area, Y2K coordinated a traffic model run with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG). The project evaluated three intersection scenarios (traffic signal, roundabout, and protected bicycle intersection) through a screening analysis to determine the preferred alternative. Based on predicted safety numbers, capacity to handle future traffic, and reduced right-of-way impact, the roundabout alternative was selected for further design.

This project allowed Y2K to leverage expertise in traffic modeling, safety countermeasures, and Synchro operations analysis. Y2K supported the final design efforts with lighting design and signing and marking design along the entire corridor including the roundabout.
